Im not sure what you mean by excursion, day trip or itinerary?

December is not an ideal time to be snorkelling in these areas as there are "stingers" in the water which can be quite harmful. The weather at that time of year is also very hot with high humidity. over 8 years ago

LisaF is correct. But snorkelling and diving is still possible and enjoyable if you get good weather. My advice would be to not book ahead but the day before on a day boat in Port Douglas. The snorkelling/diving is nicer from Port Douglas in my experience unless you are on a liveaboard (not a good idea for snokellers usually).
Go on stand-by for a discount of 20% or more. There are several operators and they are similar quality. To be safe wear a lycra suit that the operator will provide you. However when out on the reef there are fewer stingers and I often dive with friends who wear no suit. Its close to shore that the stingers are worst. over 8 years ago

just returned in Jan, stayed at Shangralai in Cains..right at Marina. Everyone will tell you, the Silver Series is best company for the reef. Pick up is right outside your door. They also have sister ship that leaves from Port Douglas. They are the best in Cains. Don't do Green Island....very introductory & nothing in comparison to Silver GBR. Hotel concierge is awesome. Also go to Kuranda...gondola UP & train down. over 8 years ago

Snorkeling is still fine at that time of year. Boats take precautions at that time of year with stinger suits etc. Ocean Spirit has been good in my experience or Fitzroy Island is reasonably priced for the the day and fun over 8 years ago
