Hi, Sydney is a pretty safe and modern city. Most places are safe but some places like kings cross ( red light district ) , refern or Waterloo can be unsafe at night but that opinion varies from person to person. In regards to food, Sydney is not a cheap city and meals are generally about 10 aud even for the cheapest meals which tends to be y Asian almost 7 years ago

Sydney is very expensive and I when I suggest budgets for people I normally recommend a daily allowance of:

    $20 breakfast
    $20 lunch
    $40 dinner
    $20 travel

Of course this can be scaled down for a budget traveller or up for a traveller with a bigger wallet. almost 7 years ago

Hi, don't be scared of Sydney - it's a very safe place. Just stay out of Waterloo/Redfern at night and don't go down any dark streets by yourself. Anywhere crowded with lots of people is generally safe. Choose a hotel that's on a main road (like George St, Pitt St) if you're unsure. You CAN do cheap food here if you're willing to eat fast food and asian dishes. Lots of small cafes too - you can get a sandwich and a drink for around $10-$15. Just don't eat in fancy restaurants.
If you're staying for a while and want to buy groceries, try BiLo, Aldi, Woolworths. Cornerstores like 7/11 tend to be quite expensive. over 6 years ago

If you are staying in a hostel they will be able to let you know the best places to visit, and what areas to avoid at night. Sydney is just like every other big city though - very safe as long as you dont go walking down dark alleys at night! :-)

Also, you can eat really cheap if you have to - going to the supermarket and making your own sandwiches is dirt cheap - but generally Sydney is one of the more expensive 'restaurant' cities in Aus. over 6 years ago
