We will be flying into Sydney, to take a cruise around New Zealand. Do either or both of those countries accept U.S. dollars, as opposed to having to exchange currency?

No you can't use USD - Australia uses Australian Dollars (AUD) and NZ uses New Zealand Dollars (NZD). You might find on the cruise ship you can pay in a number of currencies, albeit at the ship's own exchange rate.

For the time you are in Sydney you could mostly live on a credit card for hotels, taxis, restaurants, shopping etc. However, you probably want some cash to buy things like a bottle of water. It's easy to use our ATM machines with your credit or debit cards to get cash out - just check with your bank first that your cards have that facility. If you get some cash out in Sydney and don't use it all up, it's easy to change it to NZD at the airports. almost 9 years ago

Credit cards are also accepted in Australia and New Zealand - but be careful of the charges.

Your card issuer may put an additional fee. almost 9 years ago
