I am in Port Douglas with 4 friends for the week; we were wondering which company is the cheapest to go on a tour to the Great Barrier Reef with (preferably for a half day)

Never mind the cost: these guys provided the best diving experience you are likely to get: http://www.undersea.com.au/2009_10.htm ... but if you look at their home page it looks like they have gone out of business! Damn. about 11 years ago

If you are looking for budget trips out the reef, then you will find some of the best deals from Cairns. Some companies like Reef Experience, will offer a FREE introductory dive and include their reef tax in the price. However the diving from Port Douglas is really great, so it is worth the little extra if you are already there. But plan on spending the whole day out on the reef- there really aren't any half day trips to the Outer Reef. about 11 years ago

Thanks for the suggestions guys. We ended up going with the cheapest option, which was a boat out to Green Island from Cairns, where we went snorkeling. It was nice, though when I go back I'll be sure to take one of the more expensive boat cruises. about 11 years ago

Just went on a half day cruise with Tullarook. A leisurely trip to low Isles, an hour of snorkeling, and then leisurely trip home under sail. Great half day - you can even BYO. Boat takes a relatively small number so better experience altogether. over 9 years ago

Remember, you get what you pay for when it comes to dive trips. If you are serious about seeing some spectacular and healthy reef, you would be better off going off of Mission Beach or Maggie Island. Find a smaller company that's been around for awhile.

Ask around! You'll definitely find out who the sleazy companies are! over 9 years ago
