I am a first-time solo female traveler and I want to plan a 4-month backpacking trip through Southeast Asia and New Zealand. What do I need?
I would like to keep plane travel to a minimum, though I know I will have to fly from Asia to NZ. How much do I need to budget for the trip and where do I begin planning?
I've just spent 6 months doing this (plus Australia), most of it solo.
Reconsider flying in SE Asia - you save a lot of time (and buses and trains are not that comfortable) and flights are quite cheap with Air Asia.
You should start with figuring out what you'd like to see and do, and determine in how frequently you'd like to move locations. 4 months isn't tons of time.
I'd skip northern Vietnam until you get some more experience under your belt, not the easiest place to travel. But Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia are all super friendly. Cheapest is probably Thailand.
