I've always heard that it is best to stay out of fresh (river/lake) water in tropical countries to avoid water-borne diseases from flukes, worms and other tiny creatures.
But I'd really like to bathe elephants in SE Asia (I'm in Laos now), and this involves getting quite wet in river water.
I know a lot of tourists do this.
What are my safety considerations? Am I just being squeamish?
Thank you!
