I will be travelling around Southeast Asia for around three months. I will the be going onwards to oz and then New Zealand to complete a holiday working visa. I have a 85litrebag that has been handed down to me but from what I've read in other articles etc they suggests bag of about 35-45litres but that only refers to the Asia travel with no onward journey. I know it will all be determined on how much I pack and travel with anyway but how difficult is travel with a bag of this size? Am I best just to get by with something smaller? I will also be carrying a side shoulder bag with camera equipment in it. I feel like I've already answered my own question here but would still like some other travellers opinions and experiences. Thanks

Sounds like a big haul ,usually a 15to20 kilo weight limit is allowed on flights . Depending on the time and place you land in oz will determine if you need warm clothes or light summer wear . But just for ease of travell. Try keep it light. Good luck over 4 years ago

It depends what class you are traveling . You can have up to 40 kilos on Business and maybe more on First. Otherwise you will be limited to 20 kilos if you are traveling coach. However it is always best when you are traveling light. over 4 years ago

I'd say yes, your bag is too big. The lighter you travel the happier you'll be. You don't need a lot for SE Asia, and even for Oz & NZ, depending on what kind of job you'll be doing.
It is much easier to buy the limited things you'll need than to carry around a lot of "just in case" items.
I travel with a 40 L duffle bag that can go on my back (but has very few straps that can get caught in conveyer belts at the airport). I fill it about 3/4 full and still wonder if I have too much stuff! over 4 years ago

Agreed with the last post. But it also depends on the class of transport you'll use in SE Asia. If traveling with local transport, keep it really light, as vehicles can be very, very packed. You might be also walking some longer distances sometimes, or be waiting for transport at some stations and so one... You don't want to have a bag that you have difficulties in carying. Besides, you can really buy everything there, and is probbably much cheaper than in your home country. over 4 years ago

I have a 60L backpack I use and usually it fits the 25kgs (or thereabouts) almost perfectly if you squeeze. I'm from Australia so do lots of flying in and out! over 4 years ago

Brilliant, thanks for the feedback. Definitely going to go with a smaller bag. I'll feel much more at ease with the bare minimum. over 4 years ago

When we go to Asia we buy our clothes there, very cheap. So no need to take it all with you over 4 years ago
