I'm looking for towns to stay for several weeks at a time where I can swim in the ocean, eat street food and write. Suggestions? Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia .... Not too expensive please and thanks

Places that spring to mind are Sihanoukville in Cambodia and Hoi An in Vietnam ... Spent time in both. Different vibe, but both on the beach, neither very expensive when staying in guest houses (fans not a/c). These kinds of places always have party elements, but we found it easy to get away from it. over 8 years ago

Thanks Christy! I like Hoi An (especially the Mango Rooms!). I've not been to Sihanoukville but will add it to my list. Planning 6 months-ish in the region, but can only start in January .... So many places to see! :-) over 8 years ago

To add to the list: Koh Lanta, island off the coast of Krabi.

I spent 3 weeks there in a beautiful eco lodge on a small hill opposite the beach, my room overlooked the beach and the host told me that many a writer has come to stay with her. Google "Baan Rao Koh Lanta".

The family are wonderful people who between them speak, Swedish, English, French and Thai. She is reasonably priced and has a full kitchen, down the road, 2 minutes walk there is a market there with fresh produce and street food to-die-for. I think you will enjoy it! :) over 8 years ago
