    It's on the top line of keys on a keyboard, hence refers to the conventional keyboard layout. Incidentally, it actually makes typing slower by putting the most used keys far apart. (For example, watch what your fingers have to do to type "the"). And that was the idea. On the original typewriters, of course, there were metal keys that raised up to strike the paper; if you typed too fast, the keys would interlock and jam.
