Would you leave a job where they (the students and bosses) love you, where you are safe and secure, where the locals treat you politely, where even the local authorities treat you with respect, where you make only a humble but comfortable living, and where it is possible to impact people in a whole region of a country for a new job where none of the previous are certain (or even possible) but where you make four times the money? Please give your thoughts.

  • Gave up on the Thai job where I was "loved." Twice the job did not take care of my work permit in time (possible 500$ fine and 90 days in jail) and even after three months of asking I was still only promised (also on my contract) insurance. Will give my best to new job in Oman. English.teacher.Dr.Mike over 9 years ago

Good question! I believe that if the work you are doing doesn't have some meaningful positive impact on peoples lives, then you can never find it truly satisfying. You can have that *and* money if you are lucky, but it can take work and you have to find a good balance. If you did take the higher paying job, would it be possible to use some of that extra money and feed it back into what you were doing before so you can have a bit of both.

I guess it also gets a bit more complex depending on whether it's just you or if you have any dependants.

Sounds like you are doing some good things for other people - even if you don't keep it up forever, good on you :). over 9 years ago
