We are going on a rtw trip at the beginning of december but as we have an ongoing legal issue with our property which needs to be resolved before we go, we are leaving booking anything until nearer the time. What I am wondering is how late can we leave sorting everything out before visas are an issue/flight costs get expensive.
We are going to south pacific/NZ/Oz/SEA/China/Japan/Canada/USA/Central America, leaving begnning of Dec 2011.

Well, flights get both less available and more expensive the closer you leave it to departure date.

Visa's you can get closer to departure, and some embassies or consulates will often issue them in a few days if push comes to shove, but you are usually best sorting this bit out 2 - 3 months before you depart.

Bear in mind, travel into or out of Australia at the end of the year is slightly nightmarish since everyone seems to be going overseas at the same time and there's only one way to do it down here!

Depending on your passport and the country issuing the visa, you can get the visa well in advance and have a certain window by which you need to enter the country. I think for China a fe years ago, I got the visa and had 60 or 90 days to enter he country. Loads of wiggle room in many cases, so worth checking out each country's visitor visa section of their websites. about 9 years ago
