Quite complicated to explain, but I booked a trip around south-east Asia with STA Travel. The trip lasts one month so I bought travel insurance with STA Travel that lasts one month. I have now decided to extend my travels go backpacking after my tour for around 6 months. However, I don't want to book 6 months insurance with STA as it is quite pricey. Therefore I would like to buy a separate travel insurance package that begins when the other one runs out. However, I have been told that the travel insurance I buy will need to cover me from before I leave the UK. Is this true? Therefore, have I wasted over £100 on travel insurance from STA which is going to be pointless when I get travel insurance with another provider that covers me at the same time?

You can buy insurance in UK to start at up to a month in advance so could be purchased to run concurrently with one purchased to start immediately I believe. I know you can't buy it when abroad, you need to return to UK. over 4 years ago

    Hi Codie

I know this post is two weeks old so apologies if this is too late.

At time of writing, for UK travellers, World Nomads policies insured with Millstream do allow you to purchase while you are travelling (or to start after your STA one finishes), but there are conditions to doing this:

    1. you must be a British citizen (as defined in the policy terms and conditions)
    2. If already overseas, there is a waiting period before some benefits are active
    3. if you are only a UK resident and not a British citizen then you cannot purchase a policy if you are not in the UK at time of purchase.

Please read the policy wording before you purchase the policy to make sure the cover suits your needs and if you have any questions please contact World Nomads for help: infoGBR@worldnomads.com.

Hope that helps! over 4 years ago
