If you're just staying close to Waikiki having a car isn't necessary. However if you want to get to the other side of the island a car would be convenient. We do have a fairly good bus system if you don't mind catching the bus. I see lots of Japanese tourists catching the bus to Kailua beach. almost 6 years ago

I'd say you want to be able to get around the island and a car is the most flexible, speedy and efficien way of doing that. you won't need a car the entire time as access to Pearl Harbor and even Hanauma Bay is easy with public transport, but getting over to explore the North Shore and spots in-between you'll want a car. Rents one for 2-3 days! almost 6 years ago

I agree with the other answers - North Shore definitely need a car.
Waikiki, public transport is great. Parking is scarce and really expensive!!! almost 6 years ago

Around the beach area you don't need to have a car. We took a few escorted tours and then took the transit bus to go shopping. almost 6 years ago

Get a car and get out of Honolulu fast and head to north shore. You can easily drive around the island. Stay away from Honolulu or Waikiki. You will hate yourself for having wasted any precious vacation time in Waikiki or Honolulu. almost 6 years ago
