What is the condition of roads in the Congo and DRC? Is it true that they are rapidly being paved everywhere even in the heart of Africa?
Travel by motorcycle
The Congo has the least developed road infrastructure of any African nation, just 35km of paved road per 1 million inhabitants. Botswana has 3427 km (thanks Wikipedia).
Rivers and other waterways form the backbone of the Congo's transport system. Although the Chinese lent them $5 billion in 2007 to build a couple of national highways linking the sea ports and Kinshasa with (you guessed it) the mineral-rich Katanga province (which does not have access to river transport).
I don't think we're going to see strip malls and parking lots anytime soon.
I have a good friend who was in that part of the world last year... I'll contact him to see if he'll contribute to this thread.
