We are going through SA, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ruanda, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia. Do I hire or buy a phone. We shall be gone about 5 months but I'm not sure about comms. Plus we shall be in 2 vehicles and probably need something like 2 way radios. All new stuff to me so any help at all would be valued.

We hired a satellite phone for our roadtrip across SA, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia and to be honest..... it let us down when we needed it.

My blackberry worked though! Comms are quite good in most of Africa, you will notice a lot of telecom towers everwhere.

Great idea about the 2way radios. Do a google search on 4WD forums for Africa, my husband got a wealth of knowledge from some of these people while planning our trip. There are quite a few forums, find one that resonates with you and what you're planning on doing.

If you are yet to find a car hire place, we arranged ours through BushLore in J'Burg. Complete with roof tents (a must) and I highly recommend them. over 6 years ago

    • Thank you, Lisa, well worth knowing. We've already sourced Bushlore for the tented vehicles so good to know you were satisfied. Thanks. Diana over 6 years ago
