Info about Island hopping around August

Hi, no idea about costs these days but 20 years ago there we loads of ferries at all the main ports at the ends of all the islands. Just rock at in the local town and ask around. Really wasn't too hard. But here's a tip if you are game for some adventure: Island hop across to Flores, take the bus town to town to near Kelimutu, then take a side trip in a truck down to a little (but quite famous) weaving village called Nggela. Then, if you think the truck ride was insane: take the weekly ferry boat from the coast to the nearest port. Without a doubt this ride was the most insane boat ride I have ever taken. 10 meter swells and villagers steping off sheer cliffs to reach the ferry. I kid you not. One of these days I'll get to write up the journey in detail. Have fun over 10 years ago

June a good time to visit bali?

It is. Pre-tourist season and a cooler time of the year. Having said that, book your accommodation early: we are there in June too and the place we regularly stay at in Ubud is fully booked almost one year ahead. Enjoy. over 10 years ago

Are the taxis metered in VietNam? Tips to avoid being ripped off?

I dislike all the travel scams, and there are lots, designed to part you and your hard earned cash as much as the next person. But they do exist everywhere and they exist for a reason. And trust me: these people are A LOT poorer than you. (Having said that, I was just in India and was SO fed up by it all by the end I'd end up haggling with taxi drivers until they'd given me all my change right down to the last damn rupee. So I do sympathise!) over 10 years ago

Any suggestions for a trip out of the town to the countryside?

You are lucky: Manchester is really well situated. Go North West and you have the whole of the Lake District; go North East and you have the Yorkshire Dales, or you have the whole of Derbyshire on your doorstep. Most of these are best explored by car. There is a little valley in the middle of derbyshire called Monsaldale : great pubs around, wonderful countryside and walks nearby. Few tourists (any) make it here. Edale is another more obvious gem. over 10 years ago

'Rip you off' is a very subjective description don't you think? These guys are just trying to make a living and feed their families like anyone else ... over 10 years ago

I'd second Bendalong. Or you might try Green Patch at Jervis Bay which is about 30 minutes less far. Both are awesome and we go there all the time. over 10 years ago
