    Short term accommodation in Sydney?

Yes (available) and yes (expensive). Unless you want a long term bed in a hostel, which is probably discounted the longer you stay. For an apartment I would search on line for inner city areas like Surry Hills and Potts Point, or Kirribilli, Milsons Point on north side. Good luck. What is your top 5 not to miss things to see/visit in Australia?

You've got some good advice already, but here's my 2 cents worth...you might start to see a trend! 1. Sydney (harbour, beaches, mountains, great food and bars) 2. Uluru - heart of the nation, must see 3. Great Barrier Reef - any part (and make sure you at least snorkel to see what's UNDER the water) 4. Tasmania - especially East Coast - Bay of Fires and Freycinet Natnl Park 5. Melbourne and the Yarra Valley or Adelaide and the Barossa Valley or Perth and Margaret River wineries (assuming you want to taste some great Aussie wines!) about 10 years ago

What are day trips from Sydney?

Blue Mountains a must - take two days (it's a world heritage listed area after all!) Best bush walks are at Wentworth Falls (if you take the train, get off at Wentworth Falls and walk down the Darwin Walk - yes, named after Charles Darwin's visit) which is a gorgeous walk in itself (say, 40 minutes) then you end up at a spectacular waterfall and have dozens of other walks, long and short to choose from. If walking is not your think go to gorgeous village of Leura for boutique and crafty shopping and lunch or a coffee. And Katoombah for the three sisters is a must, but a little more "touristy"!!!
