What can one do in Phuket for 17 days ?
Depending on what you want to do in the Phuket region there are plenty of things you can try out... cooking classes, scuba diving around the island (Krabi is better from what i hear though..) day trips to Phi Phi and Krabi, we stayd in Patong for a couple of days and it was great for fun activities as well as working the elbow muscles with a beer or two at the bars and clubs. there's go karting, a shooting range, fishing charters, some okay surfing spots, paragliding...plenty to do! One of the better bars we went to was the tiger bar in Patong... almost 11 years ago

Where are some good small local places to travel to within 2-3 hrs driving of Hobart.
Huonville, the tahune airwalk, and all the south west is pretty much accessible in a day excursion. River paddling on the huon, mild bushwalking, In fact the best trip we did lately was to go to hastings caves, then head further down to cockle creek or reserche bay. Perfect place if its a nice day to go down and have a barbie. Hastings has thermal pools where (if its nice enough) you could have a dip in the pool. http://www.recherchebay.org/ http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/?base=16436 almost 11 years ago

any info about patong, Phuket
I would agree with steve here. Been twice. First time it was fun, loads of party and beach. However if you prefer a quieter beach, staying outside of patong is a good idea. Kata beach is much much quieter with alot less hawkers and beach boys. hiring a scooter is good if you are comfortable driving one.. make sure its covered in your travel insurance. It can save you heaps of money if you want to go around the island. costs are around 200 Baht where a tuk from kata to patong could cost up to 500+ one way. over 10 years ago
