I have one week to stay in Cairns. What should I do/visit?

Yes Port Douglas is an amazing location, the problem is , that it can be a lot more expensive. Most dive charters depart from cairns and head up to the port Douglas reefs and beyond. You will also get a better deal with dive operators based in cairns. I hope the links below help you get a good deal as you will receive a 15% discount through this site. http://www.divedirectory.com.au/codhole-coralsea/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/divingbarrierreef/ about 8 years ago

Are the inner reefs just as good as the outer reefs for snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef?

I would have to agree Original Nomad. As a rule the further you go away from cairns the better the diving is. I would recommend a live aboard trip with with Ocean-Quest or Taka or even Mike ball Dive Expeditions. Oceanquest is not to far from cairns and will guide to to the Norma, Saxon and hastings reefs, oh and the vessel tjhat you will stay on is excellent. http://divedirectory.com.au for a !5% discount on the about tours if that helps. about 8 years ago

What is the Great Barrier Reef like?

One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems, coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the worlds most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space. The Great Barrier Reef includes over 3000 reefs, around 940 islands and cays, and stretches 2,300 kms along the Queensland coastline. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is 345,000 km2, that’s larger than the entire area of the UK and Ireland combined! The reef is immensely diverse with 1,500 species of fish, 359 types of hard coral, one third of the world’s soft corals, six of the world’s seven species of threatened marine turtle and more than 30 species of marine mammals including vulnerable dugongs. You can get some great discounts on dive trips in Cairns. If you visit www.divedirectory.com.au you can get a 15% discount on all live bookings. I am a college student who will be staying in Cairns for 3-5 days. Any recommendations on where to stay or any can't miss excursions?

I know one of the better company's called Ocean-quest I have been on it a few times now. The staff treated us like kings (strange for Australia) and we where at a great location, the wife didn't like it as much as me as she has asthma and could only snorkel. Anyways I know you can a 15% discount if you book Ocean-Quest through the dive directory website found here! http://www.divedirectory.com.au/liveaboard-trips-overnight-oceanquest-deep-sea-divers-den/ about 8 years ago
