The Best of Vietnam.....Hanoi? or Ho Chi Minh City?

The south is where you can have the best "fast food" style visit. It's just much more efficient doing everything in the South. Of course, it's also more tourist-oriented there and you may have to pay more. Things in the North are a little slow and northerners are well-known for their laid back attitude. People in the South are warmer and probably friendlier towards tourists. The best part of Vietnam to me: it's in the middle, Hue, Danang, Hoi An or Nha Trang. It also depends on which time of the year. Visiting the North could be fun during spring time. However, if you go there during the Tet (Vietnamese New Year, exactly on Valentine this month) it could be dead boring. Especially if you do not know anybody and stay in a big city. Diving: consider going to Hanoi and then visit Halong Bay when the sky is clear (or when it's warmer but not too hot like in the Summer.) Or going to Saigon and then heading to one of those islands in the south. almost 11 years ago

    What are the best beaches?

Besides the islands in the South, Cat Ba island in the North, during summer, or Da Nang or Nha Trang. I had very good time in Da Nang: beach, people, good food and the hiking in Ba Na hills, near Da Nang. That is if you do not mind having a lot of people around. dvn over 11 years ago
