What is a good, central location to stay at in Paris, in terms of ease of access to tourist destinations, decency, cheap eateries, etc?

Depends when you intend to go there. In the summer it gets packed out and the only cheap places you will find are not walking distance. However this is not much of a problem because public transport is great in Paris and doesn't cost a lot. My advice is just hop on HostelWorld whenever you know when you want to be there and look for some cheap options. The ratings on hostelworld will usually give you some good idea about how central and what sort of district the place is in. Last time I was in Paris I stayed in Oops hostel. It is quite nice with 4 bed dorms, cheap (or maybe free now according to hostelworld) internet access and free croissants for breakfast. It is pretty central, Place d’Italie, walking distance from town, but also very close to a metro station over 10 years ago

Can Australians do a working holiday at the snow?

http://www.italy.embassy.gov.au/rome/new.html Basically you have to apply to your local consulate in Melbourne for a working holiday visa. Then when you enter Italy you have 8 days to go to the Questura (one of the police forces in Italy) and apply for your Permesso di Soggiorno (basically "permission to stay") - this will take a while, I never got mine and I was there for 12 months! ... you only need to keep the receipt from the Questura and you will be fine Then you can find a job and the employer has to apply for a work permit for you. I was in Bolzano which is in one of the valleys in the mountains. Absolutely beautiful place. I know a few people if you need somewhere to stay ;) If you do go there. Pop into Temple Bar and say hello to Steve and Tanya and grab a Guiness while you are there. :) over 10 years ago
