where is a good backpackers to stay?

The Schlaffmeile (http://www.schlafmeile.de/) is one of the best hostels in Berlin. Another good one is the Sunflower hostel. Both of these are on hostelworld.com and it is a good website to use to book most places in Europe. over 10 years ago

Is December a good time for a visit?

Winter in Venice is a great idea. Much much less tourists that time of year. It is a lot colder but it is still majestic. I was there in November in 2007 and it was freezing but beautiful. over 10 years ago

best way to get around the city

The paris bike system is the biggest in the world and quite cheap you just need a credit card with an EMV chip (and you need to know your PIN) Check out the wikipedia article for more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velib If this is not an option or you are going in the winter and want to avoid the cold. The metro system in Paris is great. Goes basically everywhere including out to places like Versailles over 10 years ago

we are thinking of taking the railway from Crotia down to Greece through serbia, ect has anyone done this before and have any sugestions?

Just to note from me. This is quite true for Australians as well. As the countries you are travelling through still have heavy border control make sure you take every precaution. http://www.smartraveller.gov.au should tell you about any country you are planning to go to. Border controls can be very scary and there are some strong prejudices against particular countries, these are usually between borders there though. I remember passing from Croatia (non-EU) to Slovenia (EU) and several policeman came into my cabin on a train and they started harassing a poor Serbian guy who lived in Italy and they really made very sure that he was not an illegal immigrant sneaking in. I had a Finnish friend who also experienced a bit of prejudice against her South American friends who were travelling with her through that area. Anyway I'm sure it will be fine. Sounds like a great trip and I hope you have fun. :) over 10 years ago
