Any suggestions on which tour group is the best. I would go on my own but I am a 24 year old woman travelling solo.

Hi there If you can get there yourself, then Khongor Guesthouse and UB Guesthouse are the leading budget tour operators there. I love Toroo and Degi at the Khongor Guesthouse - I have been 5 times and always stay with them. Their Guesthouse is a basic youth hostel and they run a huge variety of 'tours'. Email them at khongor@mongol.net The trips are by minivan or Russian van and fairly flexible. I'd recommend a nomad stay. A week isn't a long time as there are huge distances to cover. You could go to Terkin Tsagaan Nuur (White Lake) and Karakorum, maybe a little of the Gobi which will give you a flavour of steppe, lakeland, monastery/ancient city and desert). If you had 10 days, you could go into the Gobi proper or go to Hovsgol. Happy adventures! over 9 years ago

Is a trip to St. Petersburg from Moscow really worth the extra time and money?

For sure, it's definitely worth the money, but only if you have time to see the sites. It is a stunning city and you need at least a day to go around the Hermitage museum and Peterhof/Peter's Palace (you take a boat there) which is Peter the Great's version of Versailles. There is plenty more to see besides these things (churches, museums, canals) and it is quite unique. If you are hard on budget, but not time, you can take the overnight hard sleeper to St Petersburg and stay in a youth hostel there. over 9 years ago

Iceland: To get to the Lake Myvatn area from Akureyri and to see the sites would it be best to rent a car or is there a good tour by bus?

In Iceland it's always nicer to have your own car than go by tour. You can stop anywhere you like and there are lots of places you will want to stop! Possible in one day I believe, weather and volcanos permitting! over 9 years ago

    Cheapest hotel in ulan bator?

The cheapest places are the guesthouses, which cost a few dollars per bunk. The leading guesthouses (which are more like hostels) are The Khongor Guesthouse and UB Guesthouse. If you want a private room, these places have quite small rooms. Somewhere like Zayas has more space but no community. Cheaper hotels include the more outdated ex-Soviet hotels like the Bayangol. Palace Hotel (south side of the city) is not too expensive for a reasonable standard, but you need to take a taxi into town. over 9 years ago

When is the Golden Eagle festival?

There were two festivals in the past (they are run by tourism companies but attended by eagle hunters from all over the province), maybe they still are as I found one was on Oct 2nd and 3rd. It is always in the first week or so although dates vary each year. I have been back in 2004 - it is a great experience. You get to see all the things that Simon has mentioned - there are veteran trainers with their proteges. They also have kokpar tournaments, where men wrestle over a goat skin by horseback - it gets quite intense and is an amazing show of horsemanship as well as physical strength. There are also traders selling rugs, food etc. Best way to see the festival? Hire a horse from a local so you can cover more ground and keep up with the action! People don't stay at the festival site - they stay in town (Olgii) or with friends nearby. Some of my pictures will give you a flavour: http://www.flickr.com/photos/marnova/sets/1549244/ about 9 years ago

what is the best cell phone deal for europe.

The local prepaid simcards will always be cheaper, but it may be more convenient to use your own if the costs are not exorbitant if family members need to be able to contact you for emergencies etc. However, you could give them your local number. You could carry both? If you use your own, make sure your handset works on the Italian phone networks as the US has a different system. This usually means you will need a triband phone. over 9 years ago
