How can I go about avoiding ATM fees while travelling in South East Asia?

I used a Capital One checking account which charged me no fee for any foreign withdrawal, but the banks within some countries did charge a fee. I found that I only had to pay fees in Thailand and Myanmar but as suggested above, if you check with your bank, they may wave the fee charged by the foreign bank. Plan ahead and maximize your withdrawals. And the Capital One Mastercard has no foreign transaction fee. If the merchant/bank asks if you want the transaction in your currency, say "no" and let your bank or credit card do the conversion. It usually works out better. almost 5 years ago
