I am thinking about visiting Roatan Honduras. Are there any safety concerns?

When my son and in went there about 15 years ago, we saw that there was an upscale tourist area, a poor tourist area(where we were) and the residential areas which ranged from shacks with cooking grills outside to really nice estates. We were "escorted" all over the island by the owner of our cabana and so felt very safe. If you go from the airport to your hotel on the beach and stay there, I would assume you'd be rather safe. If you venture into town, I'd be cautious as you would be anywhere where your income is exponentially greater than the locals. The snorkeling was worth the risk, in my opinion. It was the best I've ever seen! over 7 years ago
