I'll be in Italy for 8 days.
If you are landing in Rome, i suggest: Day 1) Rome Day 2) Rome Day 3) Leave to Pisa and sleep there Day 4) Leave to Florence and sleep there Day 5) Leave to Venice and sleep there Day 6) Venice Day 7) enjoy Bolonia on the way back to Rome Day 8) Rome and flight It is FAR expensive to sleep in Venice. The suggest is to look for a good hotel at a good price in Mestre, in the mainland. From Mestre to Venice its 10 minutes by train or buses. Both travel every 10/15 minutes and are really cheap. almost 8 years ago

Has a 2-3 hour layover in Milan (en route to Pescara)... thoughts on how I may best use this time...?
For me the best in Milan is to visit the famous "Last supper" by Leonardo da Vinci, in Santa Maria delle Grazie church. But you have to book. Check out yhe official site. ;) almost 8 years ago

I want to go to Madrid to study abroad and learn Spanish. What are the chances the austerity protests will turn violent? (like in Rome)
I would say that there is 0.1% probability that it will turn violent. And i speak as an actual student in Madrid! ;) Enjoy the city!! almost 8 years ago
