Is it safe for US citizens to travel to Bali in May since the alleged terrorist threats from March 2012?

Dana, I am with Phil and Stru above 100%. I too have just returned from Bali (and other parts of Indonesia) and felt extremely safe. Be mindful of your countries travel warnings and also do some research yourself (which it seems like you're doing). There are a few precautions to take, like not going into crowded pubs and clubs, being mindful and aware of your surroundings etc etc. If you're staying at a high end resort - use the local drivers. Not to scare you, but the cars will be checked with mirrors for bombs etc. At other places I have stayed (like private villas and smaller hotels) - they dont check for these things as they are less of a target, but nonetheless I was aware of which car I was getting into etc. At times I was travelling with various consulates in armoured vehicles and to be honest, I felt more scared doing this than driving in a flagged down taxi! (bemo) Bali is a beautiful island and relies heavily on tourism. The Balinese take the terrorism threat seriously because it impacts on their livelihoods. I sincerely hope you still decide to go and experience this magical place, and if you do - consider heading north west toward Pemuteran which is pure paradise! over 8 years ago

I really want to spend may holiday in tropical-exotic island. Can you recommend me best places to see in some tropical island?

If you want to go to Indonesia - strongly recommend the north west part of Bali. Pemuteran is a stunning little place, quiet and some beautiful beaches there. Or - Nusa Penida just off Bali. Or - my other new favourite place in the world, Flores. Fly into Labuan Bajo and take a boat to Kawana Island. Absolutely heaven. almost 9 years ago

Which hotel to stay in Bali?

I always use www.agoda.com to book my accommodation and did this recently trekking through Indonesia. You can filter the search by area and how many stars you want. It's a great site where you can get fairly cheap places that are really nice. almost 9 years ago

Best places to stay in Gili Air?

There are only a small handful of options for accommodation on Gili Air and this is why its so lovely. There is a dive cafe/hotel close to the wharf (I cant for the life of me remember the name) - we stayed there and although rustic (read basic) it was pleasant and cheap. We usually book through www.agoda.com for last minute deals. almost 9 years ago

Anyone have any favorite spots in Papua New Guinea?

PNG is very close to my heart, with many favourite spots. Port Moresby is not one of them. From the reefs surrounding the islands, to the highlands - there are so many beautiful places to visit and explore. Alotau is quite lovely, as is Misima Island. The people are just so friendly and welcoming. almost 9 years ago

Does anyone have an opinion on the best accommodation at Cradle Mountain?

Cradle Mountain Lodge has a nice range of different accommodation styles to suit most needs. We hired a few pencil pine cabins (couple of families) - each had lovely spa bathrooms, a couple of bedrooms etc and were self contained. This was mid range. almost 9 years ago
