I am a freelance writer drifting around Asia (always happy to live down to a stereotype). I write travel advice for visitors to Asia at Travel Wise Asia.

I hesitate to recommend a western restaurant, but I just can't get enough of the salami piccante pizza at Girasole on Ratchapakinai in the old town. Other than that you can't really go wrong with street food and small Thai restaurants. about 8 years ago
The most accessible cross country transport in Mongolia is minibus. You can head west from Ulaanbaatar towards Altai, Khovd and as far as Olgii. I've driven solo a couple of times, but it can be a bureaucratic nightmare to get your own vehicle into the country, and it's pretty dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. about 8 years ago
