suggestions for walking tour in Madeira

Hi Rita, My boyfriend and I spent four weeks in May on Madeira working on a farm. On our days off we did some walks around the island. Most German tourists seem to come for the levada walks - most are nice and flat along the old water channels. We did one that started from Rabacal to 25 Fontes in the western part of the island. If you have a clear day, we recommend Pico do Areeiro (drive to there) then you can walk to other peaks from there, such as Pico Ruivo which is the highest point on the island. It's usually cloudy up there, so if it's a nice day, go for it. We got views all over the island and to Porto Santo. Both of these walks are easiest to get to with a car. Our favourite walk of all , however, was to the eastern most point of the island - Ponta de Sao Lourenco. You can catch a bus from Funchal to Baia d'Abra (with SAM bus company route no. 113 - try their website for timetable!) and walk from there. It's obvious where to go - the bus drops you right at the start of the walk. I hope this helps! The tourist office in Funchal is really helpful and will have maps of the island. Have fun! almost 10 years ago
