How much of Colombia is it possible to backpack around? One website mentions a tonne of "no-go" zones.

Amanda, I'm a UK citizen and have been living in Colombia for a long time now. The truth, I think, falls somewhere in between those that will tell you Colombia is completely safe and those that tell you to avoid it. If you visit the tourist zones getting kidnapped is almost unheard of, and if you're careful (as you should be in any foreign country) you should be absolutely fine. There ARE places you shouldn't go, but your question doesn't suggest to me that you're planning on going to any of these places. Going over land to Venezuala or Ecuador are well-worn routes, just book with a reliable company that comes recommended. No-one can guarantee your safety, but I think you're unlikely to encounter any problems greater than petty theft, but if you're sensible, avoiding that isn't so hard either. Does anyone have recommendations for good restaurants in Bogotá?

Hey Richard. Really depends on your price range and what you're after as almost everything is available here - including Serbian! Your best bet is to head to either La Macarena, Zona T, Zona G, Parque 93 or Usaquen. Here's some individual recommendations: 80 Sillas - Usaquen Crepes y Waffles - All over La Hamburgueseria - All over (but my favourite is in La Macarena) Wok - All over Andres Carne de Res - Chia Criterion - Zona G There's much more, obviously, but if you go to any of the areas recommended you're bound to find something. almost 8 years ago
