I'm on a British passport but have been living in Australia for 4 years as a work sponsored temporary resident. Am I an Australian resident?

I emigrated to australia in 1974 with my parents so i am a permanent resident. my passport expired in 1987. I wish to go to britain on a 3week holidayin 2012.What should i do about my passport so i can return safely back in australia over 9 years ago
