    Advice for vacationing in Washington DC with an 8 year old who uses a wheelchair (especally about public transit)

    Buses are accommodating, since the driver will lower the step for those in wheelchairs and riders are generally good at letting those in need sit in the seats provided for them; Metro has elevators, but they tend to break a lot; Taxis aren't very wheelchair-friendly. Many places in DC are wheelchair accessible, like the Monuments and museums. If they like planes and space, certainly try the Air & Space Museum, that was one of my favorites when I was a kid and I live in DC! I would skip going to places like Georgetown, only because it is very busy and the sidewalks are small, even though those in wheelchairs do get around. Stay Downtown, near the museums, because there is more room. over 8 years ago
