Hi Phil (great name by the way). Some governments, including Australia and the USA are continuing to advice against all travel to Egypt. The UK has made an exception to its advice for the Red Sea resort region (including Hurghada). So if you're british you won't be travelling in defiance of any strict advice. We've checked out the situation over the weekend, and by all reports it is calm and business as normal on the Red Sea. Now the "day of departure" protests have passed without major incident, I think the situation is calming somewhat. However, even the British government warns that the situation is unpredictable and could change without notice. This Sunday there is expected to be a National Strike, which will also include services and businesses in the Red Sea area. There could be further national strikes. Safe? Safer than Cairo, Luxor, Suez and Alexandria (police shot an unarmed demonstrator yesterday), but totally SAFE.... only you can decide. over 3 years ago

    Hi,
I'm British and live and work in Hurghada - it is completely safe here. The only difference is that there are hardly any tourists here which is seriously affecting the livlihoods of the ordinary Egyptian working in tourist souvenir shops etc. Yes, it is unpredictable, but everything seems to be getting calmer now in Cairo. over 3 years ago

Hi Phil, just updating you on travel advisories and warnings:
things are changing fast, and for the better.... Australia's foreign affairs office TODAY downgraded its travel warning for Egypt. they now say "reconsider your need to travel".
The British FCO as of today is still saying avoid Cairo but Luxor and the Red Sea resorts are okay.
Obviously keep an eye on developments. over 3 years ago

Hi, there are some disturbing news that it won't be possible for women to go to the beach in a bikini in Egypt. Is that truth? over 2 years ago

Hi Worried, no new laws have been passed so nothing's changed. I assume you're talking about the Red Sea resorts where western mores are tolerated because it's a tourist centre. Wearing a bikini in many other parts of Egypt right now would get you some unwanted attention. I guess you've been reading reports that the Muslim Brotherhood (a political party likely to be the dominant power in the new democracy) wants to have all law based on Islamic principles, or shariah. Even if that happens it doesn't necessarily mean bikinis will be banned at Sharm el Sheikh. Shariah law can be interpreted in many ways. Given that Egypt depends so much on the foreign currency it earns from tourism, I think it's unlikely they'll adopt the more radical interpretation of shariah. We'll keep an eye on developments and if there is a big change to tourism in Egypt you'll hear about it. over 2 years ago
